Russell Ball

Chief Geoscientist

Russell is a development geologist with a successful track record covering the rehabilitation and rejuvenation of old assets, the successful development of stranded/bypassed discoveries and the development planning for new fields.

He holds a first class honours degree (Exploration Geology) from Cardiff University and an M.Sc. with distinction in Petroleum Geoscience from Imperial College, London. Russell has 16 years’ professional experience gained initially through the detailed analysis of rock fabrics at Robertson Research in North Wales before moving on to development geology roles at Hess in Algeria and latterly the North Sea focused independent, Fairfield Energy.

He has successfully led, and been a key contributor within, subsurface teams focused on the redevelopment of oil and gas fields. His approach is highly analytical and underpinned by a wide technical knowledge spanning all subsurface disciplines. Russell was recently officially recognised as an Honorary Fellow of Durham University where he provides guest lectures on Petrophysics.

Russell was appointed to the Chief Geoscientist role at San Leon in September 2015 in order to support a corporate shift toward a more development focused portfolio.
